Full-Width Character

Definition of full-width characters

Full-width characters are characters that occupy two standard character positions. In computer coding, full-width characters usually use double-byte encoding, compared with half-width characters that only occupy one byte position, the display width of full-width characters is wider.
For example, Chinese characters, punctuation marks, and characters in writing systems such as Japanese and Korean are usually presented in full-width form. In contrast, half-width characters are the character styles of English letters, numbers, etc. under ASCII encoding, each occupying only the width of a standard character.

The use of full-width characters

  1. Chinese text input
In Chinese writing, editing documents and other scenarios, the use of full-width characters is very common. Chinese punctuation marks such as periods (。), commas (,), quotation marks (“ ”), etc., are all in full-width form, which can ensure that the text layout is neat and beautiful, and conforms to the Chinese writing habits. In literary creation, news reports, academic papers and other types of Chinese texts, the correct use of full-width characters is an important manifestation of text norms.
  1. Specific Industry Requirements
In some industries where character width is strictly required, full-width characters also have important applications. For example, in the typesetting and printing field, in order to ensure the neatness and beauty of the page, full-width characters are used according to design requirements to adjust the spacing and layout effect of the text. In financial statements, invoices and other documents that require precise alignment and format specifications, full-width characters can make data clearer and easier to read, avoiding layout confusion caused by inconsistent character widths.

Why are full-width characters important to developers?

  1. Keyword Optimization
In ASO, keywords are one of the key factors to improve the search ranking of applications in the app store. The reasonable use of full-width characters can increase the diversity of keywords to some extent. For example, when developers fill in the keywords of the application, they can use both full-width and half-width punctuation marks and numbers at the same time to cover more possible search situations.
  1. App Name and Description
Proper use of full-width punctuation or special characters in the app name can increase the recognizability and uniqueness of the name. In the app description, correct use of full-width characters can also improve the readability of the text, making it easier for users to understand the functions and features of the app. However, avoid garbled code or formatting errors.
  1. Localization Optimization
Different languages and writing systems have different habits and requirements for character width and typesetting. When optimizing localization, you should use full-width characters appropriately based on the language characteristics of the target market to meet local users' reading habits and aesthetic standards. For example, for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other languages, using full-width characters can make the application's interface and text more intimate and natural, improving the user experience.

Developers and operators need to fully understand the characteristics and usage of full-width characters, and use them reasonably to improve the search ranking of applications, attract users to download, and gain an advantage in the fierce competition of application markets. At the same time, they should also follow the rules and regulations of the app store when using full-width characters to ensure the quality of the application and user experience.
